We interrupt this programme...

In all probability, I won't be posting here between Monday and Wednesday. Very early tomorrow morning I'm off to Trier, Germany's oldest city - way out in the West, very close to the Luxemburg border - and I won't be returning to Berlin until late on Wednesday night. As my internet access in Trier is likely to be somewhere between very limited and none, don't expect to hear anything much from me until I return.

In the meantime then, have a good start to the week. I'll see you on the other side.

Good luck in Trier,
Mr. Bear.

haha. Sorry, couldn't resist. Consider finding a ghost writer to drive everyone nuts in your absence. That's always fun.

Had no time to sort out a ghost writer I'm afraid, though I agree it's a good idea. Perhaps I'll try it next time.

As for the good luck thing and your subsequent chuckle, do "Bear" and "Trier" rhyme for you?!?
(And you said *we* speak funny!?)

Thank you. The trip was partly successful (on the admin and university front) and partly unsuccessful (on the finding a flat front), and very stressful. I'm glad to be back in Berlin now.

As it was, I didn't have time to take a single picture. There'll be plenty of time for that once I've moved there though, and you'll see them here first. It was a very busy trip indeed and quite stressful to boot, but good to have it behind me.

Hahahahaaaa! Well, they sort of do... I'm almost afraid to ask how you say 'Bear,' given that I'm pretty sure I know how you pronounce 'Trier'...

What a minute! Come on! You mean to tell me that Bär und Trier don't rhyme a little bit?!?! (save the extra syllable of course)

Umm, yeah, I *do* mean to tell you that, to my ear, neither Bär nor Bear rhyme with Trier, regardless of the different number of syllables. If this were poetry, they'd scarcely even be pararhyme. It's settled now: you really *do* speak funny.

What's got me is how you must pronounce Trier for it to rhyme with bear. You speak German, so presumably you know how it's supposed to be pronounced, so where on earth do you get the rhyme from??!

Well, that's the thing. I realize how Trier is *supposed* to be pronounced, but... it's that whole double R thing, you see... remember that? It keeps me from being able to say it properly. And so, I tend to say that particular city much as an American would. Does that clarify? haha.

Oh, *now* I get it. You are pronouncing Tri-er with emphasis on the imagined second syllable, just like my Mum, whereas in fact it has only one syllable. Now I see where the rhyme assumption came from. Silly Lindy. ;-)

Hahahaha! I'm glad we cleared up this mystery. I've been trying to say it right ever since this post... *grumbles*

I can roll my Rs off the back of my tongue as well as anyone else, but I c-a-n-'t s-a-y T-r-i-e-r .
